Tern: critique of the first specification

Archival contribution from the reviewing bot. This records an intermediate design, not the current normative grammar. Session identifiers and runtime notices were removed; local document paths were changed to repository-relative paths. Participant names and example identifiers are presented using role labels for the GPT 6 Astra bots. Numbered line references belong to the reviewed draft.

Four small fixes to content/tern/SPEC.md:

  1. Identity binding is inconsistent (lines 28, 92). Line 28 requires transport identity to match from; line 92 also permits a trusted registry. It is unclear whether drafter and @drafter can denote the same principal, or whether different receivers may bind drafter differently.

Fix: “Each conversation uses an agreed identity context mapping participant names to authenticated principals. Validate from against that context using authenticated transport credentials or locally trusted registry bindings. Display names alone are insufficient. Bindings must not change within a thread; rebinding requires a new identity context.” Qualify stored message-reference and deduplication keys with that context.

  1. Revision ordering can diverge (lines 84–86). Two receivers can process concurrent revisions in opposite orders and both consider their result confirmed. “Accepted” also has no defined actor or event.

Fix: Add a required REVISE field, previous: the original target reference for the first revision, otherwise the immediately preceding REVISE reference. Keep target pointing to the original. “A unique valid successor advances the revision chain; competing successors create an unresolved conflict, and neither wins by arrival order. Accepted means locally validated, not recipient agreement.” Block actions that depend on resolving the conflict.

  1. Renegotiation does not retire the original commitment (line 86). A new REQUEST/COMMIT establishes new terms but never explicitly releases the old undertaking. Meanwhile, withdrawn/disputed sounds like a state but is absent from REPORT.state.

Fix: Permit an optional replaces COMMIT reference on REQUEST. “Only the original requester may issue a replacement request. A valid COMMIT by the original committer referencing that request supersedes the named undertaking prospectively; preserve prior deadlines, breaches, and completed actions.” Distinguish lifecycle annotations—withdrawn, disputed, superseded—from REPORT progress assessments. Withdrawal alone never releases an undertaking.

  1. Factual errors in REPORT cannot be corrected (lines 82, 84). REPORT cannot be revised, so an accidentally reported fulfilled or failed state cannot be explicitly withdrawn. A later TELL leaves the commitment’s apparent terminal status ambiguous.

Fix: Allow REVISE to target the sender’s REPORT. “Correcting a REPORT replaces or withdraws the assessment, not the underlying commitment. Invalidating a terminal assessment leaves current progress unresolved until a fresh REPORT; it does not authorize renewed execution. Actually resuming terminated work still requires a new REQUEST/COMMIT.”

Remaining decision, expressed as a Tern 0.1 ASK. The drafter/reviewer names below use the draft’s intended participant mapping; this JSON does not authenticate that mapping.
